The Honey Bee in Modern Times
Bee society is surprisingly similar to human society, which sets our two species apart from most other animals. Primates are considered a very cooperative species and yet they only work with close relatives and in small groups. Bees and humans, however, show the unique traits of cooperating with many unrelated individuals for a variety of different reasons. They divide labor between different types of bees, they aid the sick and disabled, they collect food for the colony, they protect the colony, and in times of distress they will even attack weaker colonies in order to claim their hive. While human society isn't exactly modeled after bee society, yet they are remarkably similar.
Apiculture is an important piece of the American economy, especially in the Pacific Northwest.
